Conference: The European Union - from crisis towards disintegration



 Summary:

At the CLDS on October 5, 2016 a discussions on the topic of the European Union - from crisis towards disintegration took place. The motive for the discussion was a book by Dr. Slobodan Samardzic The European Union: a system in crisis - with a case study of the relations between Serbia and the EU, 2016.

After introductory remarks by Slobodan Samardžić, the debate was conducted within the framework of three thematic rounds of political, economic and EU-Serbia relations. Each of them had their keynote speakers:

  • Dissolution of the European Union as a political community: ideas, institutions, and interests in a time of crisis - keynote speaker: Dr. Bojan Kovačević,
  • Economic and Monetary Union as unquenchable focal point of the crisis - keynote speaker: Dr. Branko Vasiljević.
  • Serbia's EU association and accession - the impact of the crisis on the EU perspective - keynote speaker: Dr. Maja Kovačević.

The debate referred to a wide range of issues - from causes of the delay of further integration and lack of effectiveness of the system than, failed reactions of the political leadership and present deficiencies in the institutional architecture and finally uncertain perspectives of the EU and relations between Serbia and the EU. The discussion was joined by Dr. Boris Begović, Dr. Miša Djurković, Dr. Boško Mijatović, Dr. Jelica Minić, Dr. Ilija Vujacić, Dr. Slobodan Zečević and others.

Faculty of Political Sciences of University of Belgrade  will publish a special publication with introductory papers and authorized summaries of discussions.
